#0095 As We Enter

Play
It’s only been since, like, April since I did one of these things. I’m frankly amazed I remembered the password after all this time.
What follows is a non-stop mix of some of my favorite tracks that came out in 2010. It’s kinda dance-y. I figured you all might like to party. It sobers up a bit toward the end, but I leave you wanting another sip.
My resolution for 2011: Execution. If I stick to that, it means more time with friends and family, and taking care of my peeps — giving you good music that gets you through a hard day of keeping it real.
Stay thirsty my friends. I have some thoughts brewing on a playlist around Design Thinking. I’m hoping to at least post one mix a month. I think that’s a reasonable goal, don’t you?

#0072 – 2008 In Repose

Play

It had to happen, as it does just about everywhere this time of year:  a year-in-review show.  I’ve been through several iterations of this mix with a few different approaches to get to here.  It’s been difficult.  I thought about highlighting music that I discovered this year, not necessarily stuff that came out this year, but anything I discovered you’ve heard in the previous episodes. We also got in about another 43 shows of Radio Gen1us this year, which is huge.

So I decided to highlight songs you’ve not heard (probably) on albums that came out this year:

#0071 – UnEighties

80s

Jim recently mocked me (he’ll tell you it was just an “observation”) that I’m stuck in the 80s.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  I’m a child of the 80s and no doubt influenced by the cheesy pop-rock that dominated Casey Kasum’s American Top Forty.  Starting in college, and most notably attending the ZooTV tour for U2, I was exposed to Public Enemy and Big Audio Dynamite II and that pushed me down the Indie/Alternative path that would weave through the fabric of growing up 90s.

This led to a fervent and strong love of hip hop, beyond LL Cool J, Run DMC or even Digital Underground.

This mix is a heavy blend of progressive hip hop and electronica and some trip-hop.  There’s no other theme here other than to serve notice that I’m not stuck in some scene in a John Hughes film.

That said, there are often moments I hear Wang Chung’s “Fire in the Twilight” — pretty much everyday.

#0061 – File under: Year Two New

AaronCan you believe this podcast has been up for over a year?  Four different hosts and sixty shows later, we’re still doing this and the shows are only getting better.

Sorry to have disappeared for the last month or so since Iron Deejay in June, but it’s been busy.  We had a second kid.  Work’s been rough.  There’s been some summer wind-down as the weather finally gets good enough in Chicago to be a distraction.

Nevertheless, as we are already into Year Two for Radio Gen1us, I’m going to showcase a bunch of new music that’s been on heavy rotation on the iPod:

  • Vuja De – The Orb
  • Deep Blue – Ladytron
  • Give Me a Beat – Girl Talk
  • Milk Crisis – The Go! Team
  • Keep Your Head – The Ting Tings
  • Harder Than You Think – Public Enemy
  • List of Demands (Reparations) – Saul Williams
  • Discipline – Nine Inch Nails
  • All Kinds of Stuff – The Cure
  • Inside the Fire – Disturbed
  • The One With ‘Kid’ – Local H
  • We Call Upon the Author – Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

#0019 – File under: Imperialism

Play

I was watching our President the other day and he dropped a line about avoiding World War III by keeping Iran from having a nuclear weapon. Now, whatever you think about the state of politics in the US or the world today, there’s no doubt that there’s a lot of people that just don’t like the U.S. and think we’re being too imperialistic. So this is a mix I’ve been kicking around for a while and it seems like it’s gestated long enough. This mix includes music from the soundtrack of Team America, Black Label Society, Rage Against the Machine, Front 242, The Cure, Dropkick Murphys, Sex Pistols, David Bowie, Trent Reznor, Tears for Fears, Ween, Static-X, Motörhead, Gogol Bordello, Ladytron, Outkast, Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails. Strength and Honor, citizens!

#0017 – File under: Serenity Now

Play

We chill out after last week’s fit of rage and hate with a not-all-unexpected eclectic mix featuring the likes of Darryl Hall, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Coldplay, Crowded House, Groove Armada, Sumsonic, The Chemical Brothers, The Whitest Boy Alive, Ladytron, The Ramones, Queen, Three Dog Night, Alice Cooper, Sugar, The Beatles and Oasis.  Trust me: the mix is alright.

#0009 – File under: Chicago, Party

Play

Less than 48 hours to go until the crew rolls in, this is part 1 of a two-part theme music set. If you’re in the right headspace for mischief, this set makes sense. At any rate, artists include an almost unrecognizeable Metallica, The Blues Brothers, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Tower of Power, Granddaddy, a little Schoolhouse Rock action, Kinobe, Ladytron, Badly Drawn Boy, Shriekback, The White Stripes, Muddy Waters, 311, The Go! Team, Q-Tip and Luther Allison.

If you’re going to go on a tear through Chicago, this mix is entirely appropriate 🙂
